Name: Makhanlal Chaturvedi University
Client: Govt. of Madhya Pradesh
Location: Rewa, M.P
Status: Proposed
Site Area: 5.0 Acres
Named after a freedom fighter, poet and journalist,
the University conducts courses in Journalism and Mass Communication. The
proposed campus in Rewa will be a satellite campus comprising of the Academic
block, an Auditorium, Student-activity Centre, guest house, Hostel, and staff
residence. The site is mostly linear and has an institutional context. It is
located on the Rewa-Sirmour road. The driving principles behind the design were
promoting maximum multi-disciplinary interaction and creating a
pedestrian-friendly campus.
The design of Academic block is a dynamic and porous
composition of building blocks, carving out public spaces for students and
visitors to facilitate collaboration. The east-west orientation of the building
provides abundant daylight without much heat gain. Staggered terraces created
at various levels with a floating roof give the building a distinct
architectural expression and creates a desirable micro climate.
The design intends to promote inter-disciplinary
collaboration and interaction among students. Informal meetings evoke exchange
of ideas and knowledge which serves the inspiration for the design. To promote
such synergy, the building is integrated with scattered green areas which
double as informal spill outs. The student activity centre has been directly
connected to the building, to provide flexibility of space for the students.
